Privacy policy
This policy explains what personal data The Strategist’s Brief collects, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over it. We have written it to be read, not endured.
On this page
1. Scope and the law that applies
This policy applies to thestrategistsbrief.com, our email editions, and our mobile application when released. As we are established in Jersey, we are regulated under the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018 and supervised by the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner. Where we offer services to readers in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, we also act consistently with the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR respectively.
2. What we collect
We collect only what we need to operate the publication and serve you well.
| Category | Examples | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Account data | Name, email address, password (stored hashed), subscription tier | You, at sign-up |
| Billing data | Billing name, country, transaction history, partial card metadata | You and our payment processor |
| Usage data | Articles read, briefs opened, email engagement, app interactions | Collected automatically |
| Technical data | IP address, device and browser type, time zone, referring page | Collected automatically |
| Correspondence | Messages you send us and our replies | You |
We do not collect special category data (such as data revealing health, ethnicity, or political opinions), and we ask that you do not send it to us.
3. Why we use it
- To create and manage your account and deliver the editions you subscribe to.
- To process payments and manage renewals, upgrades, and cancellations.
- To understand which content is read so we can improve the publication.
- To send service messages and, where you have agreed, editorial newsletters.
- To maintain security, prevent fraud, and meet our legal obligations.
4. Lawful bases
We rely on the following lawful bases for processing:
- Contract — to provide the subscription you have purchased.
- Legitimate interests — to analyse usage, secure our systems, and develop the product, balanced against your rights.
- Consent — for optional analytics and marketing communications, which you may withdraw at any time.
- Legal obligation — to keep records required by tax and company law.
5. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers who help us run the publication, each under a contract that restricts their use of it:
- Our publishing and membership platform, which hosts the site and manages accounts.
- Our payment processor, which handles billing.
- Our email delivery provider, which sends editions and service messages.
- Infrastructure and analytics providers that host data and measure performance.
We may also disclose data where required by law, to establish or defend legal claims, or in connection with a business reorganisation, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your data.
6. Payments
Card payments are processed by our payment provider. We do not receive or store your full card number. The provider is responsible for the security of card data in line with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard.
7. How long we keep it
We keep account and billing data for as long as you hold a subscription and for a reasonable period afterwards to meet legal, accounting, and dispute-resolution requirements. Usage and technical data are kept for a shorter period and then aggregated or deleted. When data is no longer needed, we delete or anonymise it.
8. International transfers
Some of our providers operate outside Jersey, including in the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area, and the United States. Where data is transferred to a country without an equivalent level of protection, we put appropriate safeguards in place, such as standard contractual clauses, and rely on adequacy decisions where they exist.
9. Your rights
Subject to the conditions in applicable law, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Have inaccurate data corrected.
- Have your data erased in certain circumstances.
- Restrict or object to certain processing.
- Receive your data in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent at any time, without affecting prior processing.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. You also have the right to complain to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner, or to your local supervisory authority in the UK or EEA.
10. Security
We use technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk, including encryption in transit, access controls, and hashed password storage. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your data and to respond promptly to any incident.
11. Children
The Strategist’s Brief is intended for business professionals and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with data, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Changes
We may update this policy as our service and the law evolve. We will post the revised version here with a new effective date and, for material changes, will notify subscribers by email.
13. How to contact us
